Note: Hundreds of the related sessions involved a training technique known as “negative only”. Negative only training means that the exerciser only lowers the weight (several spotters are often needed to help the trainer lift the weight to the starting position … the positive part of the exercise). Most of Gary’s negative only sessions were full body workouts involving four professional and two world class athletes, a dozen or so major college football players, and eight members of a high school crew team (note: that crew team was undefeated in the regular season and went on to win the high school world championships … and, Rowing News Magazine recently, August 2007, named them “one of the greatest high school boats of all time”). The Press of Atlantic City Rowing Magazine Honors Spirit Crew Team Article

However, some involved individuals were trying to regain their function and strength following a sports or work related injury and/or surgery. Thus, those negative only one-on-one sessions were body part specific (primarily involving the knee, hamstring and shoulder) and often, especially during the start up phase of their programs, required little to no weight. Two cases that were outside the norm were especially interesting: One involved an Atlantic City, NJ police officer that suffered a serious head injury in a motor cycle accident. Following his discharge from the rehab hospital he was unable to effectively use one side of his upper body. It took months of one-on-one negative only training to produce results that the doctors who were familiar with his work outs called “very impressive and unexpected”. The other involved an older man that suffered with a condition known as “Guillain Barré Syndrome”. This gentleman was so weak when he began working with Gary that he literally could not hold the weight of his hand above his head. His doctor (following a plea from other doctors that knew both Gary and the involved doctor) sent him to Gary after the involved “professionals” said that they had done all that they could do. Again it took several months of one-on-one negative only training to produce a level of strength that everyone involved said was amazing. Very few personal trainers process this type of hands on experience.

(2) Directly supervised more than 100,000 (non-one-on-one) machine-based muscle-building exercise sessions.

 (3) Provided what later became known as “Sports Medicine” services to scores of injured athletes and workers

(4) Pioneered the concept of machine-based muscle-building exercise during the pregnancy year (1978-79)

(5) Started to focus on machine-based muscle-building medical exercise and the related knowledge needed to successfully communicate with medical professionals.
